  • It ruined that scene in the The Princess Bride for me.

Do you hear that, Fezzik? That is the sound of ultimate suffering. My heart made that sound when Rugen slaughtered my father.

I’ve heard it to varying degrees, but the worst was the kid that shot themself by accident because dad got drunk and left his handgun out. Mom made it to the hospital and was obviously distraught … then she saw the body.

The noise she made is indescribable. An overcrowded, chaotic Emergency Department full of hardened nurses and doctors dropped into 5 seconds of complete silence and inactivity. Even other patients screaming in pain stopped.

It triggers some primal response in your brain you didn’t know exists until you hear it. It will stay with you for the rest of your life. The sound a mother makes she she sees her dead child is inarguably the worst sound in the world.

  • In the USA, got diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed meds. Start to finish took 3 weeks. I have good insurance and live in a civilized part of the country – the difference between states (and even parts of states) when it comes to healthcare is stark.

We had to move one of my elderly, infirm aunts to Michigan because the Texas healthcare system is a bad joke if you’re on public aid. She almost certainly would be dead if she stayed.

  • My mom had a rooster that hated me. He wasn’t super mean but would attack after warning me if I didn’t leave quick enough.

I solved the problem by saying repeating “I’m going to pick you up” and catching him anytime he started getting aggressive. I’d wrap him up in a towel, take him inside, and we’d watch “How it’s Made” while I pet his head and talked to him. He calmly but unhappily accepted the situation.

After a few days of that he mostly left me alone. If he started puffing up I’d tell him “I’m going to pick you up”: he’d instantly deflate and run away making unhappy noises.

  • Clearly you need to spend more time around Joe Rogan watching dude-bros. There’s also several of them on supplemental testosterone: “The doctor will tell you that your level is normal but they’ve been secretly lowering the ‘normal level’ over the past several decades. If you want I can give you my doctor’s information.”

My theory is reincarnation is real and I was a horrible person in my previous life.

Firehouse in the USA: “right leaning straight white guys that watch FOX news” is over represented. We work 24 hour shifts and thus cook two meals a day at the station. Inevitably that means I get to experience whatever dumb-ass dietary advice the manosphere/RFK Jr. is pushing: keto, carnivore, MORE PROTEIN, etc.

They get hilariously defensive when I tell them “I don’t do fad diets”.

They’re not wrong. The new testament is pretty unambiguous on what Jesus was about, and their religion is named after the guy.

Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

The peacenik that willingly sacrificed himself to save people. Someone that repeatedly preached tolerance, kindness to strangers, and that greed is evil. So I have absolutely no problem calling people that don’t subscribe to their guy’s teachings fake or hypocrites – especially when there’s examples of people that do follow that creed. E.g. Bob Ross, Fred Rogers, Dolly Parton, etc.

  • I agree with you and would expand that to cover most major religions, particularly the abrahamic ones.

I also think bigotry is evil because it’s blind hatred of anyone belonging to a group. There are decent enough people that are Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Admittedly most don’t closely follow their religion (particularly the fucked up parts) – but they still identify as such.

There’s a difference between attacking a belief system and attacking huge, diverse groups of people. Somehow I don’t think Ultra Nuclear’s intent was the former.
