News@lemmy.world•Student Reading Ability Spikes After Removing Tech From Class
8·29 days agoIn September, before the experiment started, just 46 percent of Mulvaney’s students said they felt confident about their reading ability. By February, that share shot up to 95 percent.
That seems like a wildly subjective measure when researchers have developed way better metrics for assessing literacy already, what university did this research?
The results of Mulvaney’s experiment are a breath of fresh air
Oh, I see, it’s all unverified bullshit, but nobody’s going to look too hard because it makes us feel good

Between the time of the negotiators we paid to hammer out this piece of shit and the tax breaks and government subsidies the rich assholes who will be getting the profits from this got, that’s a self evident lie

This is the most self defeating use of power I have seen since the last news story about US foreign policy I read

News@lemmy.world•Israel carries out air strikes on Lebanon, state media says, as Iran claims deal with US near
3·1 month agoIt’d be nice if JD Vance had his presidential ambitions killed by being part of this administration, but he’s been portrayed as uninvolved and unhappy with the war
Not many public statements to that effect, and if his story is “I had a vibes-based opposition to all the unpopular things the president did” he should see how well that worked for Kamala
Worst case scenario, America won’t exist in 10-15 years
I feel like as long as we have a stupidly huge nuclear arsenal, “The United States of America” will continue to exist in some form. I think there is going to be more strife in the near term, but longer term I think we will eventually land in a new New Deal type of place because you can only piss off like >70% of people for so long before everything breaks down on you. Peasant anger is contagious and historically more destructive than the nobles ever think it is.

News@lemmy.world•Israel carries out air strikes on Lebanon, state media says, as Iran claims deal with US near
12·1 month agoIran’s foreign minister said earlier that a deal to end fighting with the US is close. The agreement also envisages an end to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, Seyed Abbas Araghchi also said.
Araghchi said the deal includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and told state TV it includes the lifting of a US blockade of Iran. However, he said talks on Iran’s nuclear programme would begin later.
US officials have confirmed some of the details of the agreement, saying economic benefits for Iran would depend on Tehran meeting its obligations.
Previous reports from the US have suggested Lebanon may not be part of this deal - with Iran reportedly insisting on it.
So, the US is going to be paying the Iranian government to get back to the status quo we had at the beginning of this year? Can’t wait to see the administration try to tell us all how they totally didn’t just lose a war.

News@lemmy.world•FIFA blames empty seats at World Cup match in Mexico on fans in the concourses
271·1 month agoThe announced attendance was 44,985 — including FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Unless they have a way to independently verify this number I would bet it’s hugely inflated
There was indeed a significant number of fans standing on the concourses and by the concession stands throughout Thursday’s match.
Fuck this wimpy both sides writing, wtf is a “significant number”? Does the AP no longer employ anyone who can count a crowd?
If we want to start adding details to this, the Americans really shouldn’t be smiling (arc)
Also, a lot of “stupid” behavior people do is a direct result of them being stressed, scared, tired, hungry etc. The more stuff you have on your mind to begin with because the world sucks the harder it is to pay attention to what you’re doing.

News@lemmy.world•Hunger Strikers in Adelanto ICE Jail Moved to Solitary After Meeting Congressmen
11·1 month agoAgreed on this being fucking horrific (and a straight up violation of the first amendment’s prohibition on government restrictions of political speech), but I don’t think there’s any way anyone could visit an inmate in any prison without the jailers knowing. The fact that GEO group took that knowledge and singled these detainees out for retaliatory treatment because they didn’t like their speech is 100% fucking bullshit, but how they learned about that speech in the first place is pretty straightforward.

News@lemmy.world•CIA officer arrested with gold bars accused of making up top secret program, sources say
2·1 month agoFair enough, with both the CIA and prosecutors being involved in this story I bet there’s a lot of “I’m not supposed to talk to anybody about this, so I will only answer some of your questions… Oh, we’re definitely going to charge him with more serious crimes. What crimes? No comment, but they’re definitely serious!” type of stuff going on, but the fact that dynamic exists is frustrating bullshit
