Man, I hated doing that for OSHA respirator clearance

Games@lemmy.world•I still can't get over Skyrim. Are there any games that can replace it?English
13·1 month agoSomewhat similar to Skyrim combat with the addition of parrying, dodging, and quick-swap hotkey consumables like potions, throwable potions (called splashes), throwing knives, food, and weapon oils (flame, frost, poison). I think magic combat is much better than Skyrim. Spells have light and heavy attack options, and you can wield any combination of spells and weapons (other than if you have a 2 handed weapon). You can have up to 4 sets of magic and/or weapons in your inventory slots to quickly swap between. Stealth combat is more difficult than Skyrim. Sneaking close to enemies requires more situational awareness, and the stealth skills aren’t as overpowered as Skyrim.
Oooh, I had one of these in college and the immediate years after, but I didn’t care for it super well. A layer of algae or some other green mat grew over it and got all of the sunlight. The plant turned brown, and I was never sure if it was still alive or if it was just the turgor pressure from osmosis forcing the plant to open and close.
Yay, another one! I, too, am a geologist.
I got better!
Don’t forget the self-dealing necromancy! If Jesus is considered the son of god and also god (whole trinity myth), then him being raised from the dead means he is both a zombie and a necromancer.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How/what to start self-hosting?English
2·2 months agoHardware: what you currently have on hand to play around with.
Software: start with something simple and well documented. Not quite the driver for the learning phase, in my personal opinion.
“Utilities” as you call them: What is useful to you? What do you want to play with or need to improve your personal use case?
I don’t mean to be flippant with my answers here. Do a little introspection and determine what is genuinely useful for you to self host. I personally run Technitium, Jellyfin, a portion of the "-arr"s, Immich, and Navidrome. My family uses all of these services/utilities on a daily basis, so they are useful for me to host. I have some of the services that need CPU and GPU processing power running on my gaming PC and others running on a Lenovo ThinkCenter that I got for free from the IT department at work. They have bins of PCs slated for recycling that work perfectly fine but are “outdated”.

5·2 months agoShit, what about the giant clouds of asbestos dust that wafted through DC when the demo happened? They absolutely did not do any of the required sampling, abatement, or control measures throughout the surprise demo.
Reminds me of a song with the same name

Games@lemmy.world•"Born From Ruin, First Steps" (Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon)English
2·4 months agoYes! It’s good and you should play it. It does suffer from being made my a smaller team but also shines because of the freedom they had in making it. It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t have to be. Play it and enjoy it for what it is instead of looking at all the comparisons to other games.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Is putting cilantro in a potluck dish a war crime?English
27·4 months agoI flat out love cilantro. I think the courteous thing to do would be bring a small bowl of it and place it next to your potluck dish so people can put however much they want on it. The correct amount is a lot.

Music@lemmy.world•What's the last new (to you) band you got really into?English
2·4 months agoNew to me is Holding Absence. They did a split EP with Alpha Wolf in 2022, which I listened to when it dropped. However, I really didn’t get into HA until this week when I gave the EP another spin. The song Coffin by them is super catchy for me.

Technology@lemmy.world•Autofocusing Smart Glasses With Eye Tracking Tech Could Make Bifocals ObsoleteEnglish
0·6 months agoBold assumption on my part here, but why would the manufacturer of such a juicy target for tracking not make it with connectivity? Something like this would be monetized and milked for advertising and subscription revenue on principle alone. Eye tracking technology that determines vision clarity based on where the user looks is but a small skip and a jump from advertising based on where the user looks.
ETA: Per the first line of the article, the company is backed by Amazon.

Technology@lemmy.world•Autofocusing Smart Glasses With Eye Tracking Tech Could Make Bifocals ObsoleteEnglish
0·6 months agoYeeeeaaaahhhh, I’m going to go ahead and stick with a one time payment for proven 250+ year old technology instead of what would very likely be a subscription based privacy nightmare that can revoke my access to clear sight whenever they update their T&Cs. Hard pass, get fucked with a splintery utility pole.

Right?! The worst part for me is that there is absolutely no resistance to breathing out. I mentally expected it to feel like blowing up a balloon or something, but it’s just an open tube
