  • Do you want similar games? Something old? Something new? Something borrowed? Something blue?

If you’re looking for more gather resources, craft upgrades, stealth around, climb shit games, theres the Tomb Raider reboots, or BOTW/TOTK.

Cyberpunk 2077 has the all the free roaming outfit hoarding mayhem your heart desires.

Gothic 1 Remake is hot off the presses if you’re looking for more fantasy dino fights.

If you enjoyed the reflex action combat, Expedition 33 has that in spades (but is turn-based)

There’s no shortage of good options out there.

  • Big fan of the original Gothic and just got a new monitor I wanted to put through its paces - picked this up earlier this week. So far it’s incredibly faithful to the original - nostalgia left and right.

It’s got some QOL improvements, but so far the most noticeable changes are lockpicking and the ore economy - both improvements IMO.

Lockpicking is harder, but putting levels into it makes it much more manageable. IDK why there is so much backlash on this one.

For the economy, gone are the days you can finance your whole lifestyle on stolen cheese - items lose value when sold in bulk to traders, making ore a little more precious.

For new players: Like the original, there’s no tutorials, enemies are difficult if you’re under-leveled. Save often and learn through experimentation.

  • GrapheneOS team has a pretty level take on the issue in the original thread:

This is fearmongering based on customer support making ridiculous claims to someone. There’s nothing illegal about using GrapheneOS and the customer support is nearly certainly making it all up to get the person to go away so the ticket can be considered closed. It’s unlikely the company has done anything to specifically detect GrapheneOS or ban using it. It’s far more likely they detect not using a Google Mobile Services operating system without modifications. This customer support person went on a power trip to scare someone and get the ticket closed.

  • Hosting for two:

    • Domain - $300/yr (it’s a great domain, don’t judge me.)
    • Proton Duo - $180/yr
    • Kagi Duo - $168/yr
    • Nabu Casa (Home Assistant) - $65/yr
    • Donations to FOSS projects & initiatives - $250/yr
    • Lingering security camera subscription (next to go) - $120/yr
    • ISP Unlimited Data - $600/yr gofuckyourselfISP
    • Typical added network load ~50W - $131/yr
    • ~10yr Hardware Upgrades - $200/yr

I just upgraded my home storage setup, so offsite backup is now running at my parents house, saving me ~$250/yr (but probably costing them ~$50/yr in added utility costs)

  • I had a similar experience as a kid and decided to pick up the latest incarnation on the switch. I didn’t get as far as I would have liked, but it’s alright.

They leaned into the modern Pokémon mechanic of monsters bopping around the world on screen, which to me ironically makes the world feel more empty because the void between encounters feels enhanced as you dance around the monsters. Had to force myself into encounters with monsters I didn’t want because there’s so much less RNG.

Like Pokemon Arceus, the graphics are sparse and uninspiring, dont expect BotW-level art design. And don’t get me started on the writing. Overall it’s a meh tier game with a fun catch-em-all breed-em-all mechanic - if I had more time in the day I could probably get into it.
